Redeeming Valor and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) uses horses in a projective and relational manner to enhance mental health and to bring awareness and growth to emotional and behavioral impact on personal growth. Because we want to create the safest and healthiest environment for our clients, we incorporate a collaborative effort between a mental health professional and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address treatment goals. The EAGALA model is our format utilized. EAP is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that has an incredible impact on individuals, youth, families, and groups. EAP addresses a variety of mental health and human development needs.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is similar to EAP but where the focus is on learning or educational goals. EAL also involves the team of a mental health professional and horse professional working with the clients and horses. The focus, however, is on education and learning specific skills as defined by the individual or group, such as improved leadership, partnerships, relationships, and team building.

All sessions are on the ground – there is no riding of horses involved in the treatment process. This is psychotherapy and even though you may learn a thing or two about horses, it is not the intent or focus to learn about horses or how to ride them. We are here to address your therapy goals and we commit to utilizing the methods we have found to best support that focus. The process is solution-oriented – meaning we believe you have the best solutions for yourself when provided the opportunity to discover them. We are here to provide the space and guidance through exploring what is happening in the process. You are an individual, and every life situation you are involved in will have its own unique solutions which fit best for you – we are here along with the horses to help you find them. This process also incorporates “Best Practice” or “Evidence Based” interventions as determined by the Mental Health profession. EAGALA is an international, nonprofit professional association for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and has standards and a code of ethics which we follow and have accountability to as EAGALA Certified professionals.

Setting realist goals and priorities allows opportunities for better insight and deeper levels of understanding and healing. Evaluate what resources you have available to pay for treatment.  If you have a healthy insurance policy, it will usually provide some coverage for mental health treatment as this is a mental health treatment modality. We can assist you in verifying your insurance benefits.  The standard fee for individual sessions not covered under insurance is $180/hourly. We can always provide you with a receipt to turn into your FSA. You are responsible for paying at the time of your session (start of session) unless prior arrangements have been made. [Payment may be made by check or cash; we are not able to process credit card charges as payment.
